What Medefer offers GP practices and PCNs

  • NHS Right to Choose provider of remote‑first outpatient and elective care.
  • 48‑hour consultant assessment. New referrals are reviewed by a GMC‑registered specialist, typically within two working days.
  • Shared pathway management. Medefer arranges investigations, reviews results and issues follow‑up plans, working with our community diagnostics network so patients stay close to home and GPs aren’t left chasing outcomes.
  • Primary‑care‑led diagnostics, funded in partnership. Phlebotomy, ultrasound, ECG and other tests can run in your surgery or hub, with fair remuneration for the services your team delivers for Medefer patients.
  • Real‑time, plain‑English updates. Concise reports arrive at each stage, minimising paperwork.
  • Listed on e‑RS. Medefer appears alongside local hospitals, giving patients an additional timely option.

Why partner with Medefer?

  • Fewer avoidable outpatient referrals. Up to 90% of cases can be managed remotely with appropriate advice, preserving hospital capacity and reducing hospital waiting times.
  • Less demand from ‘waiting’ patients. Medefer manages results and follow ups; our concierge team answers patient queries, reducing repeat appointments and demand on GP practices.
  • Locally delivered specialist pathways. Community diagnostics and care strengthen neighbourhood services and primary‑care resilience.
  • Aligned with the NHS Long Term Plan. More care provided closer to home, helping tackle inequalities and reduce travel.
  • Specialist input within days. Quicker reassurance and earlier treatment.
  • Fewer journeys. Tests and procedures take place locally whenever possible.
  • Clear, joined‑up communication. Plain‑language plans show who is responsible at every step.
  • Phlebotomy & dynamic bloods. Routine venepuncture, GTT, Synacthen tests.
  • Cardiac investigations. 12‑lead ECG, ambulatory monitoring.
  • Point‑of‑care ultrasound. Community sessions by accredited sonographers.
  • Lung‑function testing. Spirometry or full PFTs in local hubs.
  • Administrative support. Booking, scheduling and room‑use assistance.
  • Other community services can be developed to meet local need.

Steps

How to refer NHS patients to Medefer

Making an e-Referral (e-RS)
Referring a patient to Medefer is simple. You use the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) just like you do for other referrals.

  1. Once you have made the referral, we take over from there.
  2. When you refer a patient, choose Medefer as the provider.
  3. Select the correct type of clinic and specialty for the patient’s needs.
  4. If you can’t see Medefer on the list of providers using a standard search you can simply type ‘Medefer’ in the organisation option to find our services.
  5. Select the Medefer service that is closest to the patient.

After you refer a patient to us, we will send them a welcome letter. This letter explains who we are, how we help, and how to reach us. An NHS consultant will look at the patient’s case typically within 48 hours. If the consultant thinks more information is needed or if tests, procedures, surgery and prescriptions are required, Medefer will arrange these. We will keep you informed every step of the way. If tests are not needed, the consultant will let you know what the next steps are for your patient’s care.

Sometimes, a patient might need to see a consultant in person. If that happens, we will arrange a referral for you via e-RS, to reduce delays and unnecessary burden on primary care service. In some cases, we can even book an appointment for them at a local hospital. We make sure that the patient knows what to do and where to go.
